About Mt. St. Helens Club
In 1930, a dedicated group of men and women conceived what would become the Mt St Helens Club. They were hikers. Many of the trails we now avidly tread were then just daydreams. These zealous people’s labor turned their dreams into a reality of outdoor pleasure.
In the late 1940s, many Club members used their spare time to build a pristine cottage on Spirit Lake at the base of Mt St Helens. There were no roads, so each board, each shingle, each brick, and each nail was ferried across the lake to the building site. The cabin was used for many Club outings during the following years. Enjoyment came to an abrupt halt in 1980 when the mountain erupted, burying the cabin forever.
The robust members accepted nature’s deed. The Club survived and prospered to become what it is today: more than one hundred men and women hiking, bicycling, kayaking, exploring, dining, talking and laughing together.
